Watch Shaheen Afridi dismantle Birmingham Bears with four wickets in first over of T20 Blast match

Shaheen Afridi: Shaheen Afridi proved yet again why he is rated highly, as he picked up four wickets in the first over of the T20 Blast match between Nottinghamshire and Birmingham Bears. Playing for Nottinghamshire, Pakistan’s talisman dismissed Alex Davies (0), Chris Benjamin (0), Dan Mousley (1), and Ed Barnard (0) in the first over innings. Shaheen was simply unplayable, with his trademark toe-crushing Yorkers.

The left-arm pacer’s first wicket of Davies was LBW, Benjamin, and Barnard were dismissed with unplayable Yorkers, while Mousley’s wicket belonged to more to a fielder Oly Stone who took a blinder of a catch. Shaheen Afridi: Shaheen Afridi’s impeccable spell goes in vain Bears beat Nots by two wickets

Jacob Bethell (27) and Jake Lintott (27) not out also chipped in vital contributions in the Bears’ two-wicket win over Notts. Courtesy of this thrilling win, Bears have booked themselves a place in the quarterfinals of the T20 Blast.

Notts had a few injury issues to deal with as Stone could bowl only three balls before limping off the field due to a hamstring injury. This was Notts’ sixth loss in the Vitality Blast. Currently, they are placed fourth on the points table in the North Group with 14 points.

Pitch Report

At this location, there is frequently fierce battle between the bat and the ball as the surface is balanced for both bowlers and batters. As the game goes on, the pitch tends to provide somewhat greater advantages to the batters. Given that the wicket has seen a lot of usage and is worn down, spinners will have a say in the middle overs. Given the pitch’s condition and the fact that this is a ground known for protecting targets, the toss winner will likely choose to bat first.

Shikhar Dhawan out of World Cup race? Veteran tipped to lead Asiad squad Laxman to coach

Shikhar Dhawan likely to lead, World Cup 2023 rejects to make Asian Games 2023 squad

It seems like Shikhar Dhawan’s World Cup dream has ended. The veteran India opener is in line to lead India’s second string at the Asian Games in September. A decision on participation will be taken during the BCCI Apex Council Meeting on July 7. With the quadrennial games clashing with the Asia Cup 2023 & the World Cup 2023, a ‘B’ team will travel to China.

The BCCI has decided to send teams for the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou in September-October. The men’s competition will coincide with India’s World Cup preparations so a second-string side is expected to take part in the continental event.

Also Read: BCCI to take final call on Asian Games 2023 on July 7

Dhawan has a near-spotless record in ICC tournaments. The veteran left-hander however has fallen down the pecking order, with the team management backing younger players. The 37-year-old is currently at the NCA building his fitness even as he was omitted from the squad for the West Indies tour.

Shikhar Dhawan’s name is doing rounds as the captain of the India B team that will take part in the quadrennial extravaganza. The left-hander is out of favour with Shubman Gill having replaced him at the top of the order. The 37-year-old led India for most of 2022, with Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya ‘resting’ with a focus on T20Is. Hardik Pandya is India’s designated T20I captain in recent times, but the all-rounder will remain unavailable due to the World Cup preparations.

Asian Games 2023: Dhawan captain, Laxman coach

  • Full strength Women’s team, second string men’s side
  • Shikhar Dhawan to lead, VVS Laxman as coach
  • World Cup 2023 rejects to form Asiad squad.
  • Final decision on July 7 during BCCI Apex Council Meeting.

Dhawan captain Punjab Kings in IPL 2023. With the team likely to be a youthful side, his experience could prove vital. He last played a T20I for India in 2021 against Sri Lanka. He will be accompanied by several non-World Cup stars, with many picked on IPL records. The likes of Rinku Singh, Sai Sudharsan and Tilak Varma could get their maiden call-ups. Deepak Hooda, Sanju Samson, Arshdeep Singh and Yashasvi Jaiswal could also feature should they miss out on the World Cup squad.

Apart from Dhawan, the Former Indian batter VVS Laxman can also join the Indian team as a head coach for the tournament. Asian Games don’t come under ICC and will not be recognised in International cricket.

The Women’s team meanwhile will be at full strength with no commitments. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side travel to Bangladesh in July, following which their calendar opens up. The Asian Games is likely to be the first assignment for the incoming head coach.

Injury scare for Australia as Nathan Lyon suffers calf injury during second Ashes Test

Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon suffered an Ashes injury scare when he limped off with a calf problem during the second day of the Ashes 2023 second Test at Lord’s. Lyon appeared to hold his calf muscle after running in from the boundary Thursday to field a shot from England’s Ben Duckett.

The 35-year-old slowly hobbled off the field and sat down for several minutes while a member of Australia’s medical team checked his injury. Appearing to wipe away tears, Lyon eventually limped around the boundary edge towards the dressing room while a staff member held on to stop the bowler losing his balance.

Pat Cummins’ side lead 1-0 after winning the first Test of the five-match series at Edgbaston. Earlier on Thursday, Lyon had dismissed Zak Crawley to claim his 496th Test wicket and ninth of the series.

Lyon’s appearance at Lord’s made him only the sixth man to play in 100 consecutive Tests and the third Australian after Allan Border and Mark Waugh. His 496 Test wickets place him eighth on the all-time list and fourth among spinners.

Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath are the only Australians to have taken more Test wickets than Lyon.

Watch Twitter in splits after Marnus Labuschagne Chewing Gum antics during 2nd Ashes Test

Marnus Labuschagne: Ashes 2023 – Marnus Labuschagne never fails to amaze with his antics. After being caught taking a nap during WTC Final against India, Labuschagne did not waste chewing gum during day one of the second Ashes Test in Lord’s. In the 44th over of the innings, the Australian batter’s chewing fell on the ground while he was adjusting his gloves. Rather than throwing it back, Labuschagne immediately put that in his mouth.

Labuschagne’s chewing game antics left Twitter in splits. One of the users shared the video and wrote, “It seems Labuschagne don’t want to waste expensive chewing gum. Another user gave a hilarious reaction to the video. While one of the netizens was not happy with the Australian batter eating chewing gum after it fell on the ground.

Marnus Labuschagne: Speaking about Labuschagne, the right-hand batter scored 47 in the second Ashes Test before being dismissed by Ollie Robinson. Despite getting a start, Labuschagne failed to capitalize on it. Steve Smith’s masterful hundred enabled Australia to post 416.

Ashes 2023: England in command after commanding reply on day two of the Ashes Test

England continued to play Bazball as they came out all guns blazing in reply to Australia’s 416. Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley put on a 91-run stand and took Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood to the cleaners. While Australia removed Crawley for 47, Duckett continued to attack and raced to 98.

Australia failed to control the innings despite Duckett’s dismissal as Ben Stokes and Harry Brook kept ticking the scoreboard. The hosts closed day 2 on 278 for the loss of four wickets. England trail Australia by only 138 runs.

Day three, which is usually called the moving day of the Test promises to be a cracking affair. Australia would be aiming to take wickets, while England would be hoping to take a huge first-innings lead.

BCCI mulls cooling off period for retired IPL stars

BCCI mulls cooling off period for retired IPL stars

BCCI is unwilling to offer any respite to players wanting to play overseas. With several stars now announcing retirement to seek avenues abroad, the Indian Cricket Board is mulling a cooling-off period. While 12 months have been mooted, a final decision will be taken at the BCCI Apex Council Meeting on July 7.

The concerns for BCCI grew after Ambati Rayudu announced his retirement after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) reached the final of IPL 2023. However, days after CSK clinched the title, Rayudu was announced as one of the overseas signings for the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) season. The former India international will feature for the Texas Super Kings, a sister franchise of CSK.

BCCI mulls cooling off period for retired IPL stars

As per multiple reports, the BCCI is worried that such a move sets a dangerous precedent. At present, there is no policy on retired players playing overseas. The board will discuss making one at the Apex Council Meeting. As per Indian Express, players might have to undergo a one-year cooling period. Should they want to feature in Indian cricket in any capacity, obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the board will become mandatory.

Like Ambati Rayudu, former India internationals Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan played in ILT20 last year for the Dubai Capitals. With T20 leagues mushrooming around the globe, there rare concerns that more Indian players could follow them. IPL franchises dominate ownership in the CPL, SA20, ILT20 and MLC.

Several former cricketers have called for Indian players to be allowed in foreign leagues. The BCCI however remains adamant about holding onto their domestic talent. The cooling-off period thus discourages Indian players from participating in overseas leagues.

IND vs WI Tests: No Jason Holder Nicholas Pooran as West Indies announce training camp squad

IND vs WI Tests: No Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran as West Indies announce training camp squad

With just two weeks to go for the IND vs WI Test, Cricket West Indies has announced its preparation camp squad for the series. Kraigg Brathwaite will continue to lead the side, but there are glaring absences due to the World Cup Qualifiers. The Men in Maroon are in Zimbabwe until July 9, three days before the India vs West Indies 1st Test in Dominica.

Also Read: Amol Muzumdar, Jon Lewis, and Tushar Arothe Lead Race for India Women’s Head Coach, CAC Decision Awaited on July 3

It is important to note that the announcement is of a preparatory squad. Several West Indies all-format players are currently in Zimbabwe featuring in the World Cup Qualifiers. The likes of Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran, Roston Chase, Kyle Mayers and Alzarri Joseph are all expected to feature should they arrive in time for the 1st Test. West Indies play their last Super Six game on July 7, with the final on July 9.

The journey from Harare to Dominica is long with very limited flights available. That puts the participation of their all-format players in jeopardy. Should West Indies however make it to the final, they could simply field an inferior team. Reaching the final guarantees a World Cup place, winning the tournament has no added incentive.

Among the players named in the 18-man squad include Test specialists Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, alongside Josh Da Silva and Kemar Roach. Shannon Gabriel, Anderson Phillip, Rakheem Cornwall, Jayden Seales & Nkrumah Bonner are also part of the camp. Some of the new faces include Kavem Hodge, Alick Athanaze and Jair McAllister.

The training camp begins at CCG in Antigua on Friday, 30 June. The team travels to Dominica on Sunday 9 July. Holder & Co are expected to join the team directly in Dominica. India themselves hold a training camp in Barbados, before travelling for the match.

Rajasthan Royals plan to lure Jos Buttler with monumental 4-year deal

Rajasthan Royals plan to lure Jos Buttler with monumental 4-year deal

Rajasthan Royals are eyeing a long term future with Jos Buttler. The 2008 champions are set to offer the England captain a lucrative four-year deal. Buttler, who has a remarkable record for the franchise, also represents the Paarl Royals in the SA20.

It is believed that the deal with Buttler has not yet been formally presented, and it is unknown if the T20 World Cup champion captain will accept it. Although the precise amount is uncertain, considering his earning potential in the competition, it would be worth crores annually. Buttler was retained in IPL 2022 for a price of Rs 10 crore.

Also Read: BCCI puts IPL stars on notice, ‘improve conduct or be SNUBBED’

Buttler has been part of the Rajasthan Royals set-up since 2018. He has a remarkable record for Rajasthan, with five centuries and 18 fifties in 71 matches.

Should the deal be completed, it remains to be seen how the same is navigated through the IPL Auction process. Buttler would most likely be guaranteed retention when the mega auction returns after IPL 2025.

England players are particularly in demand, given the white-ball revolution that saw them lift the 2019 World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup. Jason Roy recently cancelled his deal with ECB to play in the MLC. Moeen Ali is expected to do so with Texas Super Kings next year.

Jofra Archer was reportedly in talks with the Mumbai Indians about a deal that would require his team’s approval to represent England, according to The Daily Mail.

Check Pictures of Virat Kohli roaming as free bird on the streets of London

Virat Kohli: Virat Kohli cannot enjoy few things as a common man in India, but the legendary batter can experience certain small joys of life outside India. Kohli, who is currently on a vacation in London was seen enjoying his stroll on the streets of London. The 35-year-old aced the causal look and was seen in a white T-shirt and black sweatshirt.

After playing World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia in Oval, Kohli is on a month-long break in London with his family. The right-hand batter attended a spiritual program along with Anushka Sharma and now is busy exploring London.

WC Tickets to be out by next week as fans brace for hotel price gouging

Virat Kohli: Netzines react to Kohli’s picture say ‘What is Vin Diesel doing alongside Kohli

Kohli’s picture became viral in no time, and netizens found Vin Diesel’s look alike and started commenting on the same. One of the users wrote, “Vin Diesel and Virat Kohli both didn’t recognize each other.”

Another one commented, “What is Vin Diesel doing with him.” After the vacation, attention shifts to West Indies tour for Kohli. For the unversed, Kohli loves walking and never misses an opportunity to walk outside India. Speaking to Star Sports, the legendary batter said,

“I have not walked once in India and that is something I miss so badly. During my childhood, our go-to market was Jwala Heri in West Delhi. I used to go there regularly. I would park my scooty and roam over there.”

“That’s something that I really miss. If someone gives me 12 hours, I would honestly just walk around. That’s a different joy of walking on the road, go whichever shop you want, eat or buy something.”

IND vs WI: Kohli aims to get back to form during the Test series

Kohli missed out on scoring runs in the WTC final against Australia. The 35-year-old’s dismissal in the second innings triggered a collapse, and India yet again failed to win the final of WTC. After that disappointment, Kohli would be eager to get back to form during the Windies tour.

The Caribbean land holds a special place for the former India captain as it was here that he made his Test debut 12 years ago.

While Kohli could not make his Test debut count as he was dismissed for 19 across both innings, he would be eager to make amends during the two-match Test series against the Windies. Kohli also requires just 178 runs to complete a 1000 Test runs against West Indies.

Kohli has already scored over 1000 runs against Australia (2,042), England (1,991), South Africa (1,236), and Sri Lanka (1,085).
