IND vs SA: T20s and ODIs is fine, India needs to better poor track record in Tests

india vs south africa ind vs sa india in sena countries

The Indian team plays yet another high-profile series against South Africa starting next month, which involves 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs, and 2 Tests. The white-ball format is fine, but it is the Tests that India would be looking to win, as South Africa is the only place where we have never won a series if we talk about SENA countries.

Let’s start with England first. Since 1932, India has played 19 away series against them, and won three, with their first win coming in 1971. Back then, India had beaten them at the Oval in the third Test. The second series win came in 1986 when India beat England 2-0, and the third came in 2007 when India emerged victorious 1-0 in the Pataudi Trophy.

Against Australia in Australia, India has a better record, as they have beaten the Kangaroos the last two times, in their backyard. These series’ were in 2018/19 and 2020/21, while before that India had never won any series in Australia despite trying 11 times since 1947.

Next, India in New Zealand could not have been a better script. In their first away series against the Kiwis in 1967/68, India won 3-1. But thereafter, India won their next series only in 2008/09. So overall, in 10 attempts in New Zealand, they have two series wins.

Team India’s Test Wins in South Africa

The worst is reserved for the last. Forget a series win, India has only won four Tests in South Africa, with their first win coming only in 2006/07. The closest India has come to winning a series was a 1-1 draw in 2010/11, but apart from that it has always been a lopsided result. Despite some great Indian teams touring the nation, the Proteas have always found the answers.

India’s Batting Woes in South Africa

Traditionally an excellent batting side, Indian batsmen have always struggled in South Africa. So much so, that India has never crossed the 500-run mark in an innings there. In the 23 Tests India has played there, India’s highest team total has been 459, in the 2010/11 series, during the 1st Test in Centurion. Overall, the score has been breached only four times, and never in the same series.

Golden Chance in 2023/24 to Change Record

India announced the Test squad for the South Africa series on Thursday, and a few new names were added to the team. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who averages 88 in two Tests, has been included, and so has been T20I star Ruturaj Gaikwad. Shreyas Iyer has been brought back to the setup, with Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul as wicket-keepers. Bowling remains strong as ever with Jasprit Bumrah leading the pack, along with Mohammed Shami, and Siraj. Two spinners, R Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja complete the team.

Rinku Singh gets maiden ODI call-up after impressive start in T20Is

Rinku Singh gets maiden ODI call-up after impressive start in T20Is

How fortunes can change in a year! Rinku Singh’s transformation from a struggling young cricketer to the next big thing has taken less than 12 months. The left-handed batter on Thursday earned a call-up to India’s ODI squad in the IND vs SA series on three back of his impressive T20 performances.

Rinku Singh only played four matches in his first season for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), failing to make a mark. After missing the 2021 IPL with a knee injury, Rinku Singh received his first man of the match award in 2022 with an innings of 43.

Despite his failure to get going properly, KKR backed his talent and retained him in the 2023 auction. He set the stage ablaze in the 2023 IPL, earning a name as a specialist finisher. Rinku announced himself on the international stage in a special manner, hitting five consecutive sixes in the last over against Gujarat Titans with KKR needing 28 runs of five balls. He followed it up with some other brilliant performances, earning himself his first T20 call up against Ireland.

Rinku has been in fine touch in List A cricket too. He has shown he can adapt to the demands of the game by playing innings according to the pace of the format. He has an average of over 40 in both Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring 1108 runs in 40 matches in One Day format. His average is slightly better in T20s where he has scored 924 runs in 38 matches.

Rinku Singh gets maiden ODI call-up after impressive start in T20Is, fight to cement his place in 50-over format too in IND vs SA ODI series.

A shaky performance against Ireland might have made things tougher for Rinku with many able batters knocking the door, but Rinku dazzled once again in the T20I series, scoring a quickfire 38 of 21 balls in the 2nd T20I. The innings earned him the man of the match award in the match, cementing his place in India’s squad for T20s against Australia.

Rinku played the finisher’s role perfectly in the first T20 against Aussies. India were chasing 208 and Rinku’s 22 of 14 balls ensured India won the match with a ball to spare. Batting first in the next innings, Rinku handed a perfect end to India scoring an unbeaten 31 of 9 balls. The batter is yet to get out in a T20 international match.

Seeing his form with the willow, it is only rightful that the youngster is groomed for ODI cricket too. The BCCI has ensured the start of the process by picking him for the IND vs SA ODI series. The Southpaw would be hoping to end the year on the same note as it stated.

WATCH: Jason Sangha pulls off stunning catch at slip in Sheffield Shield match

Australian cricketer Jason Sangha pulled off a stunning catch in the ongoing NSW vs TAS Sheffield Shield match. The former Under-19 captain, who was positioned at second slip, leaped to his left side and dived fully horizontal to sent Tasmania batter Doran packing.

Sangha’s phenomenal catch will undoubtedly be one of the contenders for the catch of the Summer. It’s an every-year ritual in Australia to nominate the best catches of the Summer and ask the public to vote.

Speaking about the former Under-19 captain, this is not the first time the all-rounder has displayed his catching reflexes on the field. Earlier, the 23-year-old pulled off a one-handed stunner off his own bowling to sent Micheal Neser back in the pavillion. Neser hit a low full toss from the leg-spinner and anticipated the ball to go towards the boundary.

However, Sangha stuck out his right hand and pulled off an instinctive catch on his followthrough.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes goes under the knife, to start rehab soon

England Test skipper Ben Stokes on Wednesday announced he has undergone a successful surgery on his left knee. Stokes, who missed out the initial phase of the 2023 ODI World Cup with a niggling hip problem, came back into the side to help the Three Lions earn the Champions Trophy spot. Stokes pulled out of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 to undergo the surgery on his knee.

Stokes will be looking to complete his rehabilitation process as soon as possible to get back in shape. The injury has hampered his playing prowess to such an extent that the allrounder has not bowled since July 1.

AB de Villiers explains how GT missed ‘fantastic opportunity’ by naming Gill as new skipper

De Villiers about the golden opportunity missed by GT by naming Gill as the new leader

More than the trade deal of Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians, AB de Villiers is perplexed that Gujarat Titans named Shubman Gill as the captain rather than Kane Williamson. De Villiers feel that Williamson, who has a truckload of leadership experience with regards to captaincy, would have been a great choice as captain and allowed Gill to just play freely as the batter. However, GT took a huge punt and named the 25-year-old Indian opener as their new captain.

De Villiers thought by not naming Williamson as the captain, GT missed a golden opportunity ahead of the IPL 2024 season.

“The minute I saw Kane Williamson’s name as a retained player, I thought there was a fantastic opportunity to give an experienced player who has done it before an opportunity to captain for you. Give Shubman Gill the opportunity just to cement in all the formats in Indian cricket and just to have another good season at the IPL,” De Villiers said on his YouTube Channel.

For the uninitiated, Gill does not have prior experience of leading a IPL team. While he was always earmarked as a future leader in GT, even the 25-year-old would not have anticipated captaincy coming this early to him. Life is indeed moving in a fast lane for Gill, who just had a breakthrough season with bat in hand for India in 2023 across formats.

Also, GT had Rashid Khan for captaincy as he was the incumbent vice-captain to Pandya for two years in GT. But, GT team director Vikram Solanki felt it was the right time for Gill to be given captaincy as he has been one of the leaders within the team group for two years.

Apart from AB, even cricket expert Harsha Bhogle felt giving away captaincy this early may not allow him to play freely, as he did during this IPL 2023 season. Gill topped the run-scoring charts, ending up with 890 runs. AB though is looking forward to seeing the way the young GT captain copes with captaincy pressure in this IPL season.

“They decided to throw him in as captain. It may pay off; I am not saying it is wrong. I am saying that it was a great opportunity for Shubman just to learn a little bit and know that the plan is for him to be captain in 2025. Nonetheless, I am excited to watch him perform and lead from the front,” the former RCB star added.

‘Difficult conditions to bowl’ Suryakumar Yadav, Ashish Nehra defends India bowling

Suryakumar Yadav, Ashish Nehra defends India bowling in IND vs AUS 3rd T20 blaming on dewy conditions as Glenn Maxwell powers Aussies to win

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Ashish Nehra have jumped in the defence of India bowling as the Men in Blue suffered a loss in the IND vs AUS 3rd T20. Glenn Maxwell spearheaded an incredible run chase for Australia, nearly single-handedly steering them to a remarkable victory over India by five wickets. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s century propelled the India Cricket Team to a formidable total of 222/3.

Despite Australia losing wickets at regular intervals, their batsmen managed to stay close to the required run rate throughout. Ultimately, it turned into a display dominated by one individual.

After the match, Suryakumar Yadav emphasized the crucial significance of dismissing Maxwell, who caused havoc among the Indian bowlers. However, he pinpointed how the dew in the field created a rather adverse condition for India bowlers.

“The plan was to get Maxi out as quickly as possible. To defend 220 with so much dew, have to give something to the bowlers. Australia were always in the game. Told the boys we’ll try and get him out quickly but it didn’t happen, it was insane.” said Suryakumar Yadav.

In the final two overs, Australia required 43 runs to win, and it looked as though India would manage a win. However, Maxwell and Wade never gave up, taking Axar and Prasidh Krishna for 22 and 23 runs, respectively, in the final two overs. Suryakumar Yadav, however, came into defence of Axar Patel.

“Axar is an experienced bowler, though there’s always a chance if he’s an experienced bowler even if it’s a spinner when there’s dew. Very proud of my boys.” SKY added.

Leg-spinner Bishnoi continued to be the standout bowler for India with stats of 2/32, while Prasidh had a dismal day to put it simply. Despite giving up 39 runs in his first two overs, the right-arm pacer did a commendable job of giving up just six in the 18th over. However, when it came time to bowl the game’s last over, he was disorganised once more and was unable to save the grace.

Suryakumar Yadav, Ashish Nehra defends India bowling in IND vs AUS 3rd T20 blaminng on dewy conditions as Glenn Maxwell powers Aussies to win

Ashish Nehra also resonated with Suryakumar on the difficulties of bowling in the dewy condition. Speaking on the note and India’s bowling performance on a whole he said:

“Difficult conditions to bowl anyway. But if you see as a bowling unit, you would like to defend those run. Specially in the last over a guy like Prasidh Krishna who has all the talent in the world (should be able to defend the runs).”

“Going forward, lets hope he will learn from these things. These small things makes you stronger as a bowler. There’s no hideway here, there are only two routes, either you sit and dwell about what happened, or you move on from what happened today.” he concluded.

Suyakumar Yadav becomes Aaron Hardie’s maiden T20I wicket in Ind vs Aus 3rd T20I

Suyakumar Yadav becomes Aaron Hardie's maiden T20I wicket in Ind vs Aus 3rd T20I

Aaron Hardie on Tuesday picked up the first T20I wicket of his career in the form of Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav. The all-rounder, who replaced David Warner in the Australian squad before the beginning of the Ind vs Aus T20I Series, helped Australia break a crucial partnership by removing the dangerous-looking Indian skipper.

Suryakumar got off to a steady start after India lost two quick wickets in the form of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan. Surya soon came into the groove and started playing some expansive shots. SKY targeted Hardie as the right-arm fast bowler went for a fair share of runs.

However, it was Hardie who had the last laugh as Surya horribly miscued a scoop short on a good-length ball. The ball found SKY’s outer edged and carried to the gloves of Mathew Wade. SKY looked in touch and could’ve gone on to play a long innings but Hardie made sure the Indian skipper departed promptly.

The wicket will be a big boost for Hardie who has been hailed as the next big thing in Australian cricket. Hardie, who plies trade for Perth Scorchers in Big Bash League, has been backed by the likes of Mike Hussey to be the player of the tournament.

Glenn Maxwell levels Rohit Sharma for most T20I centuries, check full list

Glenn Maxwell has levelled Rohit Sharma when it comes to scoring most T20I centuries during the IND vs AUS 3rd T20I.

Another miracle from Glenn Maxwell. This time, India was on the receiving end while everyone remembered what he did to Afghanistan three weeks ago in the 2023 World Cup. In the process of chasing a mammoth 223, Maxwell also levelled Rohit Sharma’s record for most T20I centuries. The Australian all-rounder’s 4th T20I ton came in quick time (48 balls), as he finished the match on the final ball of the match.

Most T20I centuries

Maxwell scored his fourth T20I ton in just 100 matches, compared to Rohit’s 148. However, Maxwell may not hold the record for long, as Suryakumar Yadav and Babar Azam both have one century each. Surya has played 45 fewer matches, while Babar is much younger than the Aussie.

IPL 2024: Who will be Mumbai Indians captain? Rohit Sharma or Hardik Pandya?

As Hardik Pandya completes a homecoming, the question is who will be Mumbai Indians captain? Rohit Sharma or Pandya in IPL 2024?

Is it too soon or too late for Mumbai Indians to bring back Hardik Pandya? And the bigger question is why? While some Mumbai fans are happy to see their prodigal son’s homecoming, some may be wondering, why, especially a year before the mega auction. And why did Hardik Pandya leave captaincy in Gujarat Titans to only be Rohit Sharma’s deputy at MI, at least for IPL 2024? There must be a bigger picture!

It’s unclear what went down between Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians. But it’s clear that an IPL-winning captain won’t accept a trade if captaincy was not on the table.

What happens to Rohit Sharma?

He could be 36-year-old but he is still the most successful captain of Indian Premier League with five IPL trophies. Only the legendary MS Dhoni can match him.

The World Cup 2023 heartbreak aside, Rohit has to take some tough calls to prolong his career. Even though he played the World Cup like an explosive T20 batter, hammering 597 runs at a 120.94 strike rate, his numbers in T20Is and IPL have dwindled.

In the last three IPL seasons, Rohit Sharma managed just three half-centuries. And since 2016, his batting average has never touched 30. That’s a concern.

As Rohit Sharma contemplates giving up at least one format to prolong his India career, stepping down from Mumbai Indians captaincy could also be on the cards. He would have less pressure and could play freely as he did in the World Cup.

What’s in it for Hardik Pandya?

Was Hardik Pandya so homesick that he did not care if he would need to play under Rohit at Mumbai Indians again? It’s unlikely. The only logical explanation could be Hardik taking the mantle from Rohit at the end of IPL 2024. But that’s just an assumption at this moment.

Hardik is India’s captain-elect in T20Is in the lead-up to T20 World Cup 2024. It’s very likely that Rohit Sharma won’t play in the T20 WC next year. And there won’t be a better player than Hardik taking up the captaincy mantle at MI. He epitomes what MI have stood for. Hardik is the first successful player to come out of MI’s scouting program. He not only has put up match-winning performances, he has proved that even away from home comfort, he can make it work as a leader.

He is the natural successor to Rohit Sharma at Mumbai Indians. And that’s the reason, it raised eyebrows when MI let Hardik leave in 2022 ahead of the mega auction instead of Kieron Pollard.

But as the prodigal son returns home, Hardik Pandya will be the next Mumbai Indians captain. When? That’s still up for discussion.
