Ibrahim Zadran (98) and Rahmat Shah (55) starred with the bat in the 1st ODI as Afghanistan claimed a comfortable 6-wicket win. Chasing a target of 269, the visitors didn’t take a wrong step and kept the scoreboard ticking. Zadran and Shah stitched together a match-winning 146-run partnership that put Afghanistan in the driver’s seat. Valuable contributions by captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (34) and senior statemen Mohammad Nabi (27*) ensured that they crossed the finishing line comfortably with 3.1 overs still left.
Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva guided the Lankans to 268 after they were reduced to 84-4. Asalanka’s 91 went in vain as their bowlers failed to take wickets at regular intervals. Sri Lankan spinners looked guileless, and the duo of Dhananjaya de Silva and Dushan Hemantha bowled 19 overs of spin between them without taking a wicket.
